In 843, the grandsons of Charlemagne (Charles the Great) signed the
Treaty of Verdun dividing his empire. Charlemagne was followed by his
son Louis the Pious who was a weak ruler and unable to control his own
sons who fought continually. After his death Louis' three sons divided
the Kingdom among themselves. Charles the Bald took the west Frankish
lands that later formed the core of France. Louis the German took the
eastern lands that became Germany, and Lothair received the middle
kingdom that extended from the North Sea to Italy. Although the
divisions were made for political reasons, two different cultures began
to emerge. The inhabitants of Charles' kingdom spoke a language that
would become French while the Eastern Franks under Louis spoke a
Germanic dialect.
