The full gauntlet takes the place of the basket hilt,
assuming it meets the standards for full gauntlets(and
if it doesn't you shouldn't be wearing it anyway).

For swords that is true, quilions of some sort are
required; however, the quillions can be very
small(like one of my daggers, which has just a strip
of leather wrapped around the rattan base a couple of
times).

For axes and maces, that is not true. no quillions
are required. I tend to put a strip of leather on
mine anyway just cause it looks better and it clearly
defines where the gripping surface is. That being
said, the weapon doesn't have to be gripped there, it
may be gripped anywhere along the haft as long as it
does not break weapon standards(ie: allows punch blows
or "shoveling"). Many weapons are desinged with the
original grip set for powerful blows or in a spot that
is visually appealing, however the weapon is normally
grapsed farther up the hilt for more control. My mace
and Jareth's axe are prime examples of this.

For polearms, that is definitely not true.

Hope that helps!
