That puts me in mind of a book that I first read many years ago whose central figures were an order of monks in a post-apocalyptic world.  In the early parts of the tale, one of their duties was book smuggling, trying to maintain as much knowledge as possible in a society determined to burn all books and eradicate all trace of technology.  The book was A Canticle for Lebowitz - an excellent read even if you're not into science fiction.
