In 1415, during the Hundred Years war, English and French armies fought
the Battle of Agincourt. War erupted in 1337 over English claims to
French territory. The hostilities lasted until 1453. This long period of
conflict would be significant for many reasons. It marked the decline of
feudalism because the major battles were won by foot soldiers and not
knights on horseback. At the Battle of Agincourt heavily armed French
knights attacked the ranks of English long bowman across a muddy field.
The attack was a disaster as 1,500 French knights were killed by the
well-trained English bowmen. The English went on to reconquer Normandy
and by alliances took control of Northern France. The war would
eventually turn for the French by the miraculous leadership of Joan of
Arc.
