On this date in 1563, Capt. Richard Hore and 120 passengers and crew departed England on the first known sightseeing trip to the New World.  But this little-chronicled voyage was not destined to be a pleasure cruise.  The stores of food aboard proved to be inadequate, and when the ship arrived in Newfoundland, attempts were made to scrounge meals among the unfamiliar flora and fauna.  The captain’s log revealed that a number of the travelers had not only lost their sense of adventure but that they also had begun feasting on their unsuspecting shipmates.  Fortunately, a French vessel happened by and unwillingly provided nourishment and return transport for the stranded tourists.
