That which is written in the stars. He who desires to learn what good they prefigure must read them from west to east; but if he would be forewarned of evil, he must read from north to south.
--T. Lewis Davies's Supplemental English Glossary, 1881

Birthday of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642),
the Italian astronomer, mathematician, and physicist who found that the Earth was not the stationary center of creation, as the Church taught. Long after his death in 1642, while his body was en route to its final resting place after exhumation, Galileo's right middle finger was cut off by a souvenir-seeking student, apparently eager to remember the finally fashionable stargazer. The recovered relic is now a part of the permanent collection of the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence, Italy.
