scaldings!

A cry raised to warn others to get out of the way, as though a person were carrying something scalding hot.
-- William Cope’s Hampshire Glossary, 1881

Penny Loaf Day
Initiated in 1644 during the English Civil War, this curious celebration in Newark, Nottingham, resulted from a recurring dream of Hercules Clay in which he saw his house ablaze. After the third vision, he leaped from bed and hustled his incredulous family outside, though no danger appeared imminent. His premonition soon came true, when Oliver Cromwell’s rampaging Roundheads mistakenly bombed his dwelling to smithereens. Grateful for his family’s deliverance, he created an annuity that, until funds were depleted, set aside £100 each year to provide bread and footwear for the local poor – as well as a sermon for all – which is delivered in Newark to this day.
