Death of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), the English mathematician and physicist who pioneered the transition from the paradigm of alchemy to one more closely resembling modern physics, and was probably the first to extend the physical laws of Earth to the heavens. “I do not know what I may appear to the world,” he once confided, “but to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”
