Not as fun as yesterday's word, but I didn't know this usage (not being a
computer nerd).

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): carrier (not of viruses)

carrier [KAYR ee er]

noun

A signal used by modems to detect the presence of another modem.
Whenever one modem calls another modem, the two modems send
carrier signals to each other. One carrier is the answer, and the
other is the originate.

Admiral Davis could tell that the Yorktown had been sunk. He
dialed up the ship's BBS with his modem and couldn't get a
     carrier.
