SOAP MAKING CLASS
Items provided:
Fat
Lye water
Items you need to bring:
Pyrex (glass) bowl (1)
Pyrex measuring cup
Stainless steel spoon or wire wisk (2)
Soap molds (3)
Essential oil or fragrance
Other stuff(4)
Coloring (grated crayon or soap coloring)
Eye protection*
Rubber gloves*
Full apron (or old over shirt)*
Box to carry your items in
Plastic bag to put your used utensils in
until you get them home to clean them.
Notes:
(1) Since the mixture is caustic, metal is not
recommended. The mixture also causes an exothermic
reaction (it produces a great amount of heat) so a
glass or pyrex bowl that can withstand heat changes
is best.
(2) NO aluminum, silver, or wood, unless you intend
to throw it away after use. Aluminum and silver react
with the mixutre and the wood will never be clean
enough to use with anything else.
(3) Soap making supplies can be purchased at Michael's
MJ Designs or Hobby Lobby. Make sure that any oils
or fragrances are approved for the skin; read the
label! Colors specifically for soap can also be purchased,
or you can grate a crayon. The color of the crayon may not
be the final color of your soap.
(4) You can add finely ground oatmeal, crushed dried rose
petals, herbs (such as rosemary, basil), fruit peels
(grated orange or lemon rind), or pumice powder.
* These items are optional but highly recommended, as the
mixture contains lye and is very caustic. It will sting and
blister your skin and either discolor or make holes in
clothing.
