Yes, this would be an excellent gathering for your friend to attend.  
It should be an excellent opportunity to get a basic grounding in the 
SCA instead of having to absorb it via osmosis at events and such.  
I've learned something new at every SCA 101 I've attended, even when 
I've been one of the teachers.  :-)
