    i know it's somewhat mean   but try painting mouse traps (old kind ) and hanging them on the tree  or on the table   set  to make sure they don't get hurt on the table put a piece of paper over it   as far as the tree they take their chances    my cats decorate the base of the tree by sleeping on the tree skirt
