Bice,
Una is at school but I printed your note and placed it on her desk here at the house so she will see it when she gets home from school today. Thank you (and Gary) for sharing your thoughts with her. I know I enjoyed reading your missive too! And Caelin, while there are folks at the VFW posts (and nursing homes) that she could interview it is always interesting to get information from friends and family (and when your a kid less scary too).

Seriously, try your local VFW.

Since my husband and I were both in grade school at the time, we were able to supply her with a good volume of info. I knew being old would come in handy someday! We even had a diverse aspect of it since he was in Montana and I was in Florida (with blackouts) and Oklahoma. We both had strange memories of events. I had not thought much about it before, but it seems that those experiences have colored the attitudes I have about several subjects today.
The last thing I told her was to think about the pride most of us felt after the 911 tragedy and the support for our people in uniform. Take that feeling and sustain it over a period of about 5 years + and you will understand a lot about our ideas of Country and Pride.
