[Loch-Ruadh] ShipHolds Again

Elizabeth,

Sorry to put a hitch in your culinary plans but in old nautical terms, the
phrase "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" refers to the
somewhat square brass base that the cannon balls were stacked in next to
each cannon. This allowed up to 30 cannon balls to be stacked in a pyramid
next to each cannon without them rolling around on deck. The problem was
that when it got real cold, the brass would contract faster than the iron
cannon balls so it was possible that the cannon balls would pop out of the
brass monkey. Thus the phrase :-)

So, do I get the job as cook or what?

//E.H.

(thinking up recipes for monkey balls - with, of course,

enough liquor to make sure we sing our best!)

Oh, BTW, Lady Elizabeth you do not have to know the difference between a
Monkey's Fist, Claw or Balls unless you are an officer, bosun or a seaman.

More on Shipholds.

Unlike a ship's hold where cargo is stowed, a shiphold is a household based
on a nautical theme/ It's usually organized along the lines of a ship in
that the head of the house hold is the Captain followed by the first mate or
officer (the difference between 1st mate and 1st officer is the difference
between a merchant ship and a Navy Ship). The shiphold functions pretty
much the same as a house hold.

The only requirement for this shiphold is that we must learn and sing Sea
Chantys (mostly at the top of our lungs in an inebriated fashion).
