[Loch-Ruadh] sewing machine recommendation

Bernina's are wonderful, but I don't know if he could get one for $500.00.  There are also some really good Singer's in that range.  I would stay away from Brother, because they break down too much and require too frequent maintenance.  I've had two of them, and they were a lot of trouble.

To the seamstresses (and seamsters?) in the group, what brand sewing machine do 
you recommend?  I have a friend who is looking for an all-purpose machine which 
will also do buttonholes.  He's looking to spend $250.00 - $500.00, and will 
probably sew things like costumes and curtains.
