Yep. I agree with Bice. Bertha is a Singer, the small machine (the one II use for buttonholes) is a Singer. And Bertha was born in the 1930s! 
  My serger is a Janome (once called New Home) and they make pretty good machines, too.
  Look for one that has more metal parts that plastic parts.

I know a lot of our group don't care much for Singer but, if you would like
a testimonial on their behalf, I can accommodate. I have had a Singer (my
second one) for about 35 years. I have made boat covers out of heavy
water proof canvass down to lace wedding dresses and some baby clothes.
My mother has one that she made a living with and it is about 60 years
old. She has sewn furs, upholstery and all kinds of clothing and home
decor items and it still works great. I think the key to good service from
whatever machine you get is good maintenance.
