Administrative units

* Bovate - the amount of land one ox can plough in a single year
(sometimes called an oxgate). Approximately 15 roods or one eighth of a
carucate.  (See Lesson 23 for definitions)
* Hide - four to eight bovates. A unit of yield instead than area,
measuring the amount of land needed to support a single household for
growing and tax purposes.
* Knight's Fee - five hides. A knight's fee was expected to equip one
soldier for a knight's retinue for war.
* Hundred  or Wapentake - 100 hides grouped for ennumeration and record
keeping.
