Sorry all for not being more in touch but the adaption to this unaccustomed heat has drained both Robyn and I.
We hope to be more active as the month wanes, and if someone could let me know when the next bardic circle is to be held i would be glad to attend. I realize its very close and they came by to invite me, but due to heat i was not at my best to even think clearly at the time. I thank the people who came by and sorry for not being the best of hosts because of the weather on me physically. Hope to see you soon. Kennard of Bath.

In my experience (For three years, I was a builder/crewperson for a previous
employer's entries in the Cardboard Boat Regatta competition in Arlington
http://www.arlingtonvibe.org/2010/07/river-legacy-cardboard-boat-regatta-2010/ I
wont say that *I* was responsible for various rule changes, but it's fair to say
that our team was, um, part of the problem they have attempted to solve the some
of the current rules)....  where was I? Oh, yes, in my experience, cardboard can
indeed make surprisingly decent boats, especially boats with only one journey to
make.

Working with cardboard has it's frustrations, though. Probably the biggest is
that the corrugations give it a "grain" that makes it tend to crease when you
intended for it to bend. Once bent, it will tend to always bend in the same
spot. Much of the inherent strength of carboard depends on flat panels and
straight bends and seams. A traditional longship design will need long planks
with compound curves and cardboard doesn't do that particularly well.

It is, however, very hard to argue against it in terms of price and
availability, at least in small quantities, and paint can fix a LOT of visual
issues.

For our purposes, the potential flammability is an asset, as well.

Sluggy!

I wold think it would be easier to use cardboard, with a wooden keel and
framework.  It is a lot more flexable.

OK,..I've been going over these & have a question.
Would it be easier to use cardboard or the 1/8 luan plywood?

need to be wider than you might think to start it up for the end curves.

I just thought I would pass along a few items from the Fall Brawl meeting and from the Populace meeting for those that missed either.
?
Populace 8/3/11
?
I opened my first populace meeting with a request that we continue our push to find new members.? In the past few months we have lost several members and the impact on us as a small group is huge.? I'd like to call for us to strive to add three new members in the next year, to help build our numbers.? Our current temporary hospitaler, Cat, is being wonderfully proactive in finding and inviting visitors, and I'd like to ask everyone to give our visitors as much courtesy and attention as we can muster to keep them coming back.? In the future I will be pushing to have a new member mentoring project.
?
I'd also like to push for all officers, me included, to seek deputies for their position.? I need a deputy seneschal and can recommend the position, as it has few responsibilities and can exempt you from other duties!? Contact an officer if you wish to serve as deputy.
?
The Chronicler would like to remind you that the deadline for the Scarlet Letter is August 20th, and missives are needed from officers and about events, demos, and hospitaler activities.
?
The Archery Marshal and Knight Marshal are planning a joint practice August 28th at 1 PM at Tegwared's.? If the temperature is too high to practice the practice will become an armor and archery workshop.
?
The Exchequer reports that the NMS and profit split checks from Red Tape were sent and received, that we received a check from Gulf War for volunteer hours, and that the check for the Middlefaire site for Fall Brawl was issued and cashed.
?
Fall Brawl event:
?
Please submit recommendations for awards beginning now!? Don't wait until last minute or there may not be time to get them approved.
?
The Populace official voted to title the Chivalric champion the "Bear of Loch Ruadh" in remembrance of Conor Mac Namara "Bear."??? Melanie has been inviting people on Facebook to the Fall Brawl event.? Shed load out for the event is scheduled for October 8, 10 AM and shed load IN will be October 22 at 10 AM.? Prize donations are still needed, please bring them to Fiona, or to any meeting for delivery to be stored by Fiona.? Silent Auction donations are to be brought to Cat or brought to site.
?
It was voted to change the cloak for the Chivalric champion to a Baldric instead, which will be made by Bear's sister.? The replacement cloak for the Bardic Champion has been volunteered to be made by Lady Magge McPherson, with materials supplied by Loch Ruadh using funds voted on previously.? I have volunteered to provide a bardic staff and will be looking from materials to use.? It was suggested to change the Bardic Champion regalia to a favor, instead.? We will be looking for suggestions for the design of the favor.? The question was not voted on, but was tabled until the next Populace meeting to allow discussion.
?
Polydore requested that we discuss visiting the Genghis Khan exhibit in Irving, and it will be circulated on the e-mail list for scheduling and organization.? A date of August 13th has been suggested.
?
We are working on scheduling a trip to the Gulf War site to set the standing stones, but need those able to attend to come forward to schedule the trip.? The intended trip date is September 2nd-5th.
?
Thanks,
Terrence

Good analysis. My thoughts based upon this;

The ship is only going to be about 4' in length. More than that may cause heat issues at the location.
That being said, if we use the cardboard grain to our advantage, thos compound curves may actually be easier
cutting across grain. Of the 3 designs that you had links to, I believe the middle (knarplann) one would lend itself
as the best for this particular task.
I do like the idea of possibly using the luan as the rib/keel framework.

Input? Thoughts?
