[Loch-soilleir] Loch FP/Sunday in the Park on 4/24

Yes, both Loch Soillier and Stargate have bags of "loaner armor" so
people can try it out before buying gear. I am planning to be at the
practice this Sunday with loaner armor, but may be running late due to
other weekend activities.

If its fits your schedule you could also go to the Loch/Stargate
combined practice at 7:30pm on Tuesday nights at the University of
Houston (entrance 13 near the chapel). At least one of the sets of
loaner armor is usually available and a good group of rapier folks are
there and happy to discuss getting started.

If you plan to make your own armor then the Ansteorran rapier rules
(found here: http://rapier.ansteorra.org/marshalate/index.htm ) are what
you need to design to. The most important step however is getting an
authorized rapier marshall to conduct a "punch test" on scraps of the
fabric you will use BEFORE you spend the time and money to make your
garments. To do this contact the marshal ahead of time so they can have
a broken foil blade or drop-tester to conduct the test. Then bring a
scrap at least 8-12" square made of the type of fabric and number of
layers you intend to use. Having a couple different types and extra
layers of each can help ensure that you find a workable combination.

The standard fabric in years past was four layers of a sports fabric
called Trigger, the new favorite is to use a tight woven linen because
it breathes much better. My armor is from linen I found at a local
shop. Many people have gotten a sturdy linen (called Judy linen) from
Silk Road Fabrics in Austin ( http://www.srfabrics.com/ ).

Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
