And then, one year for variety, we decided to hang one upside down...&
the next morning all that was still there was his socks pinned to the
tree?  Thus the tradition as it survives today?

Old Loch tradition- We find a member of the Stocking family and hang
from a tree.  It seem that the tradition started many years ago because

missing sheep.
