My two cents- For the price, it's hard to beat a Yamaha soprano plastic recorder. They're cheap, the pitch is good, they're freakishly low maintenance, and relatively bomb proof. You can leave one in your car and jam it in your mouth when you're stuck in traffic, so it's easy to build up the hours of practice you need to be competent. It's a gateway to a wide range of other instruments, like shawms, cornemusen, rauschpheifes, bagpipes, and lets you easily get comfortable with the literature. <o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_3965"><p class=MsoNormal style='background:white'><span style='font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif;color:black'> Jumps to instruments beyond that intro are where it gets tricky, since the quality and price can be all over the map. I strongly recommend joining on line groups to trade info on makers. Check with the experts; try instruments out. Take lessons where you can, and play with a variety of people inside and outside the SCA.
