My two cents- For the price, it's hard to beat a Yamaha soprano plastic recorder. They're cheap, the pitch is good, they're freakishly low maintenance, and relatively bomb proof. You can leave one in your car and jam it in your mouth when you're stuck in traffic, so it's easy to build up the hours of practice you need to be competent. It's a gateway to a wide range of other instruments, like shawms, cornemusen, rauschpheifes, bagpipes, and lets you easily get comfortable with the literature. </span></div><div id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_3965"><span id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_4236"> Jumps to instruments beyond that intro are where it gets tricky, since the quality and price can be all over the map. I strongly recommend joining on line groups to trade info on makers. Check with the experts; try instruments out. Take lessons where you can, and play with a variety of people inside and outside the SCA. When you're getting a really good instrument, expect to put down substantial cash.</span></div><div id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_3965"><span id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_4482"> Look for opportunities to work with other groups. I primarily want to encourage people to not be intimidated to get out and give it a try (especially instrumental consort music since that is my personal interest, but other musical forms are not excluded).<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div>First, I would encourage anyone who is interested and able to come and attend!<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div>Second, I am interested in any advice anyone on the mailing list might want to contribute to the discussion. I would like to give resources on where to get period music, good ways to find acceptable (but still affordable!) musical instruments, and any other information that might be pertinent. It might be nice to know how you got involved in early music to encourage newcomers.<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div><div id="yiv8262440062yui_3_16_0_1_1439999447203_3971">I'm thinking of this as a group discussion more than me telling everybody how it is (I've only been doing music in the SCA for one year!).
