Duncan,
   It is regrettable that people see something
different as threatening and scary.  I would like to
suggest defusing the bomb before making it bigger.
    What I suggest is that you call your local police
and invite them to send a couple out to take a look.
You can probably set this up on your time-frame.  Your
neighbors and police are acting in a typical manner of
being afraid of the unknown.  Show the officers what
it is we do.  Photos, researach books, garb, etc. 
Help them to understand that we are not racists,
satanists, etc.  If the authorities realize that the
neighbors' fears and complaints are unfounded, they
will be more likely to leave you alone.  With luck,
some may even like what we offer and join us.  It has
happened before.
   Since the majority of SCA'ers are more intelligent
and open-minded than the average citizen, we need to
work to educate them not only on Medieval/Ren history,
but on what the SCA is.  The more we fight them, the
more they will push back.  Situations will escalate
into ridiculous, out-of-proportion fiascoes.
