Another helpful hint, look at clothing from various periods.  Find one that 
suits your body style and sewing level, this can help. ( It's very hard to be 
Italian ren if you are built like Kate Moss).  If you have trouble sewing on a 
button, stick with something simple and someone will teach you how to 
embroider on it, or teach you how to sew.
