(giving Halldor a virtual hug)...

I'm sure Isobel meant no disrespect or harm. I think,
perhaps, she was in her own way trying to help a
fellow newcommer who was feeling frustrated. I'm a
newbie too, and have often felt out of place or unsure
of what to do....HOWEVER....I'm also a pushy nosey
broad who has a tendancy to dive on in, damn the
torpedos! So, my newbie experience has not been
tinged with fear of failure or fear of asking the
wrong questions. Have I stepped on toes with my
fumbling and bumbling...probably. Have I made
mistakes...oh yeah! But I've found most veterans to
be very helpful in guiding me on my way and most often
quite forgiving of any mistake or mistep.

A few things to remember, from this newbie's
perspective...

1. It's a game.

2. It's a game that's been going on for 20 or 30
years now and ANYTHING that runs that long is going to
get complicated.

3. It's a game! This is not reality, it's recreation
in both senses of the word...Re-creating history, and
spending time in recreation with friends and family.

4. And, did I mention, IT"S A GAME! Heck, I still
can't figure out all the rules to football and
basketball and I've been watching my son play both for
years. I still holler at the wrong thing and get
laughed at by the crowd, but heck, I'm there, I'm
supporting my team, and I'm making an effort. That's
what counts in life, and, from what I can see, in the
SCA.

So...don't worry about being perfect, all you newbies.
And you old geezers,(lol) don't worry about being
taken for granted, 'cuz you're not. My best advice to
the new kids is to invest in a large 3 ring binder,
get on the internet and start printing up anything SCA
related that tickles your fancy. Study up on the
things that interest you and go for it. Don't worry
so much about winning awards or ribbons or such. Just
get steeped in the culture and have fun...the rest
should follow at a natural pace I would think.

And ASK QUESTIONS! Don't be worried about looking
foolish. It seems to me that whenever I've gone off
the limb and asked the foolish questions or done the
obviously new thing, I'm sure I'm branded as a Kook
but well meaning and harmless. I can live with
that...lol

Now for true confessions...as a new person, at my
first few meetings, I must confess that Lord Halldor
somewhat concerned me. Frankly, I thought he was
REALLY WEIRD...and perhaps a tad bit scary...not in a
mean way, but scary in a crazy way, which I'm SURE is
a demeanor he likes to cultivate..hee hee. I have
since found him to be a great guy with a sweet and
lovely wife and possessed of a playful and generous
spirit. I can't imagine the Barony without him and
his merry band of Skaargardians (?). I am often
surprised by the delightful people I find once I get
over my fear of an imposing posture or character that
they present in play. My point is...everyone here "is
just plain folk" and most are very helpful. I only
wish I lived closer so we'd be able to participate
more. (missed pop last week so I'm missing everyone!).

Ok..now I think I'm just rambling...not really awake
yet and not really wanting to work...*sigh*...but I
must. Anyhoo....see you next populous and ya'll all
behave!

God be with you in every pass. Jesus be with you on every hill. Spirit be with you in every stream, headland, ridge and law, each sea and land, each moor and meadow, lying down and rising up, in the trough of the waves or on the crest of the billow. Each step of the journey you go, go with God.
