Muriel,

I understood from your first message that you ment nasty gossip.  However,
what you said was gossip, and I was trying to make the point that gossip is
part of how we share information with each other.  When Olf tells us about
his grandchildren it is imparting news, so what is it when someone else
tells me about his news?  It is a great idea to ask people to not be nasty
to or about one another, but not very reasonable to ask them to stop talking
to and about one another.

Another point to the scandelous and unpleasant gossip you were referring to.
Just because it is not nice does not mean it should not be told.  I still
think my friend who new about a child sex offender at my church should have
told me about it.  Instead she helped keep it quiet by discussing it with
the minister and then her family resigned their membership.  It was a nasty
scandle, but my child was in danger, and I should have been told.  Also,
this is not a reference to any particular person in the barony.  The
incident really happened, and I am using it as an example here.

That being said, I do think we should all make an effort to be more
accepting of each other.  The Golden Rule is a good one to live by.  There
is room in this game for some tolerance.
