This is just a thought, but I would think "rank by proxy" through a spouse's position/achievement/skills...etc.  would be VERY period.
 
Women would be recognized for many of their own accomplishments, but would ALSO be knows as the wife of.....(fill in the blank here)
 
It was assumed that a wife would be proud of her husband's accomplishments and would, as marriage is considered the joining of two souls into one, assume a little of the glory for herself.  After all, we have always been the power behind, as well as on, the throne!
 
Hang in there, Isobel.  As I tell my kids when someone's nit picking them...they're just jealous!
