ah we have households everywhere and for many reasons.the most applicable
definition i have learned over the years is they are groups of like-minded
individuals who want to share their SCA experience.
then we have the unique form of household called a stead, for
example,gunnarsstead.we elect a chieftain,and anyone can,at anytime,call for
a vote to become chieftain themselves.so,as far as chieftains go,gunnar has
done well, since no one has called for a new chieftain in almost 10 years.the
other thing that sets us apart from the norm,is that we can belong to a
house, and still be a member of gunnarsstead.what binds us together is more
or less a viking thing.we share an interest in the northern way of life and
lit's laws.we do follow stead law as we know it.that is to say,we follow old
icelandic law right down to the way we settle disputes amongst ourselves and
with others outside the stead.if you have seen the 13th warrior, and you
remember the duel scene with the huge red head and the small blond man,you
have seen icelandic law in more than one form.i cant remember the name of
duel right now,it escapes me.but when the small blond man throws the king's
son a bag of gold and says"see to your friend,he was a good man",he is
paying wergild,(some call it werguild).in essence he is paying the man's
family what his life is worth in gold for having killed him.perfectly
acceptable, and in fact, demanded by icelandic law.
one of the biggest attributes we share as an icelandic stead is that we
are probably one of the most hospitable steads in the known world.if you
happen by our encampment sometime, you may notice your mug is never empty, nor
your belly, for that matter.and your heart and ears may be filled with song
and story as well.
as for finding a household,if you so desire, and they arent necessary at
all,i would suggest,as wlily has, that you ask questions of those people you
prefer to hang with when you are at an event.if you express an
interest, spend some time with those folks and see if it is really something
in which you wish to be involved.and most of all,do not be afraid to say no
if asked to join a house you arent particularly interested in joining.by the
same token dont be afraid to be denied entry into said households either.
either way you choose to go,households can and usually do make your SCA
experience a little more fun,as you can spend time with those you
particularly wish to to spend time around.but never let it be said you have
to be in a house to spend time with those whom you enjoy their company.

                                 Triumverate of House Firestorm
p.s. we in firestorm like hotties like sami<EG>,drooling on himself>,,wanna
join and be gawked at constantly?<maniacal laughter>
