Dell to Aquire Alienware

Dell announced it has entered a definitive agreement to acquire PC maker
Alienware, known for its radical case design and high-performance gaming
systems. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Dell said Alienware will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary following
completion of the transaction and will maintain its own product development,
product marketing, sales, technical support and other operations, as well as
the Alienware brand. Alienware management and founders will continue to
operate the company as a stand-alone unit of Dell.

That means that Alienware will continue to use AMD processors in its
systems, as well as Intel chips. Though Dell has said in the past it doesn't
have an exclusive agreement with Intel, it uses only Intel processors
throughout its lineup. Dell has attributed its reluctance to use AMD chips
to concerns that the company can't produce the volume Dell requires.
Industry analysts have been predicting that Dell will launch an AMD-based
product this year, most likely a server.

In an announcement posted on the Alienware Web site, CEO Nelson Gonzalez
states, "We believe that this acquisition will offer our customers the best
of both worlds-an Alienware that takes advantage of the world-class business
practices and operational efficiencies that have made Dell one of the most
respected companies in the world, while preserving the DNA of the Alienware
brand and product strategy portfolio."

It's not clear whether Dell will continue its XPS line of gaming systems,
which compete with Alienware systems. Dell Chairman Michael Dell says,
"Alienware's products are an excellent complement to Dell's own line of
high-performance computers designed for gaming, enthusiast and media content
customers. In addition to offering high-quality, high-performance products,
Alienware has tremendous brand appeal with consumers and creative business
professionals."
