[Namron] Recruitment & Retention

I'd like to relate a story . . .

Several of us from Namron went to coronation. We arrived at about 2:30 in the morning and crashed at a local hotel. The next morning, we were all decked out in our finest attire and went to a local Denny's for breakfast. It was crowded and busy. Our group got crammed into a corner booth with enough room to breathe, but eating was not the easiest proposition -- 7 of us where 5 should fit and some of us women wearing large dresses, hoops or petticoats. (Okay, some of us were just large, too, not all of us are as small as we once were - LOL)

Anyway, we had two people come and ask questions about our costumes -- were we in a play? We explained about the SCA and that we were installing our King and Queen. About that time another group of similarly dressed patrons arrived, said hello to us and were seated somewhere else in the restaurant.

A bus boy, providing water and coffee was VERY interested in who we were. Our Baroness was prepared and pulled out a business card showing him how to find out about his local group. His face lit up like it was Christmas.

Vista Print offers free cards for cheap shipping and anyone can design a "business" card for the SCA. It is a great way to let people know about us. When we are in public, and especially when we are dressed in garb, we do advertise the SCA, whether at home or traveling. We are our own PR at restaurants and not just at demos.

I felt embarrassed that day to not have thought to have a business card with me to hand out to show someone how to locate their local group. I learned a valuable lesson from Baroness Maleah and am working on designing my SCA cards now.

appalled that one of our own would act that way in a public setting.
Sometimes were are our own worst PR, but then again sometimes we're our best
too. Remember the Golden Rule and when you have a problem address it calmly
and rationally to the proper person. As soon as you start yelling, people
stop listening.

For those of you who rose to the occasion thru praise or tips, well done.
