[Namron] Minors at a SCA event.

Agreed completely Grimmie, but there are people who do bring their children
to events and then spend the rest of the event being sought out by others to
take care of their own child. The attitude of the SCA that we are all
family and it takes a village to raise a child is part of the issue with
these people because they see this attitude as an excuse to do their own
thing and expect others to keep an eye on their child for them. Having a
child myself, when we bring him to an event we usually end up with several
children in our camp. Most of the time the parents ask if it's ok for them
to let the child stay there and play and tell us where they expect to be,
but occasionally we get one that the child shows up in camp, noone is really
sure how they got there, when they got there or where the parents are. For
us this is a real issue because with Chass being a brewer, there's almost
always alcohol in camp and usually his medications. Neither of these items
needs to be in contact with a minor, especially someone else's minor.

We try our best to keep these items (and others that may be dangerous such
as knives) out of sight and/or out of reach, but children can be very
curious and very inventive if they decide something is interesting enough to
investigate.

It is plain and simple if you bring a minor to a SCA event it is YOUR legal
responsibility to keep track of them at all times. That mean that they are
to be in your area at all times. By having a SCA officer baby sit your child
is leaving the SCA open to possible trouble. If you hire some one to take
care of your child at a SCA event then that would remove the SCA from any
responsibility. If you are at the list field then that is where the child
should be, at feast then at feast, if the child is asleep in the tent you
should be in camp. Rember if you bring a child to a event they are your
responsibility. If you do not want the responsibility of watching your minor
at a SCA event do not bring them. DO Not make the SCA baby sit your child.

Thank you for trying to keep your children's info on them.
This tagging idea is still in the early stages of application for ME.
Finding a way to keep the kids from objecting too much is an important
consideration. For the 14-17 sect maybe having it pinned under a top layer
of clothing, so they could just flash it when necessary would keep it from
making them look silly or young. (if that's there objection).
For youngersHaving it on the back side of a sash they are willing to wear
made of cloth would make it so they wouldn't be reminded of it and it
wouldn't be flapping around. I'd like to collect many styles of tags and let
the parents choose which one they think will be most effective for their
child.

Yes it would be nice to have the "tag your kid" policy enforced but I
don't foresee that happening.

I think there has been only one thing I haven't been able to "get done" in
the past 2 decades in the SCA. hehe haha...
those words I've spoken only once and that happened to be last week over
pizza.

  But anyway,

If the SCA doesn't enforce tagging before something tragic happens, maybe
they will afterwards.
I am moving forward with the opportunity to head off something bad, before
it happens. If nothing else I can always hand out tags to parents with a
Pooky smile on MY face.

Johny apple seed / Pooky tag n' plead,
  Pook
