also, if you put gussets under the sleeve the body can fit closer without interfering with the  range of motion.  I have seen evidence of this in a few museum pieces.  I use a rectangular or square gusset but I have seen triangular ones used.  Not sure which gusset shape was more common.

You could sew the arms on instead of cutting a giant letter "T". It 
will fit better and move more comfortably. Just a quick extra step that 
makes a huge difference, and is historically accurate to boot.
What material are you using? If you mentioned it, I guess I missed it.
