I have *never* been to Gulf Wars. With that disclaimer in mind...

Many areas around the site have *still* not recovered from the hurricane
last year. If you normally stay in a hotel, you should double-check and
make sure that the hotel is still in business and hasn't been damaged. If
you don't have a reservation, you will probably not find a room when you get
there. (A friend of mine wound up spending the night in his car in Gulfport
recently when he was driving through...the hotels that were still open are
completely full and have been for months now.)

You should not assume that you'll be able to drive offsite for dinner,
supplies, or even things like soda or ice. Businesses in that area
contrinue to recover, and those that have supplies have to give priority to
local residents. Think seriously in terms of a primitive campsite when you
pack supplies. Even if the site has power, it may be intermittent at times
as they continue to repair the grids. Also be aware that the communication
networks were disrupted and are still being repaired. Cell phone coverage
may be spotty, and even pay phones in the area may be hit or miss.

If the bugs are usually a problem, they may be even more so this year.
Standing water that might have been treated in the past will probably not be
treated this year since municipalities are still trying to get basic
services in place. There is also the potential for a higher presence of
wildlife (non-human...smile) since areas there have been disrupted and may
not have adjusted enough for the local animal population.

Pay attention to this mailing list. People in the area will start to give
specific details about what is available and what isn't. That should help
you to plan.

It will be a unique experience. If you want to go, you should go. Just do
some additional planning before you leave, and you'll have a great time
regardless.

Care, Bubba
