I am not a member of Northkeep's or Wiesenfeuer's electronic mailing
lists, so I cannot speak about how much this affected them. But I can
offer some simple clarifications at this point.

It is "okay" to say "Hey, I'm throwing my name in the ring". It is okay
to say "As I understand it, there are three sets so far: Lord So-and-So
and Lady Such-and-Such, Master Muchadoo and Mistress Q, ..." etc. It is
okay to ask for contact information.

What is "not okay" is promoting one over the other, discussing their
failures, or comparing their merits. It is "not okay" to use the
mailing list say "Meet me at fighter practice this weekend and I tell
you why Such-and-Such is a bad choice."

This may sound extreme to some, but mailing lists are easy to ignite. A
topic like this can quickly become personal. Putting the two together,
you have what might feel like personal attacks. When it is all said and
done, whoever the Crown appoints to follow us (as well as all their
friends and enemies) will be unable to forget who was "for" them and who
against. And what of the poor fellows that made a good showing but were
not chosen? They may well feel their contributions to the barony so
unwelcome that they should quit, what with all those negative remarks in
the mailing list archives for all to see forever.

I suggest that those who do declare their intent to apply for this
position make themselves available to the populace. (Whoever gets the
job will come to see the joke in that statement one day.) Those members
of the populace who cannot make it in person to the meetings, events,
and practices over the next few months should probably contact the
candidates directly with questions, either by mail, email, phone calls,
paper letters, or face to face meetings. In the most extreme cases, one
could rely on friends to give one such information, but for a topic as
important as this I would want to get the information first-hand.

Yes, this is a slower method than just having a big discussion on the
list. You might say this is something of an "anachronism." But it is
only the past couple of years that email might be reaching 50% of the
populace. Which means there is a huge number of people still not signed
in to the mailing lists for their interests to be represented.

Rereading my post before sending... This is starting to sound like an
old ongoing argument from this and other mailing lists. So to save the
eyeballs of those reading this, if you want to argue with me about
disenfranchisement of members with no access to email, please email me
offlist at "ulfie at cox.net".

To wrap this all up what we are trying to say is: we can talk about
generalities on the list but not personalities on the list. Our goal is
to do this smoothly and effectively without harming people in the
process.
