Lori,
Thank you for saying in different words from a different person what we are trying to say. We are NOT asking for the moon, just an opporutnity to play.
I am the Guild Head of the Guild of St. Camillus de Lellis which was developed to help one another with disability issues. There is SO much that goes on behind the scenes with us to make things better for our own play.
Some examples are:
1. How to make a white cane look more period.
2. How to make a support cane look more period.
3. How to dress a service animal so that the animal's dress meets state codes, but is more period.
4. What to watch out for with each other for mobility issues, immune system issues, pain issues, etc. When an autocrat that has a disabiltiy is over doing it, make him/her SIT DOWN and DRINK WATER.
5. When someone breaks the Baroness' nose, be sure to get ice on it ASAP to minimize the bruising and to be sure she can see out of her eyes.
We want to make the SCA MORE fun, not LESS fun. We want to play, too. Telling us to take our tin dishes and go home hurts. We want to belong and play right beside those of you who have no disabilties at all.
Of course we want the heavy fighters, the rapier fighters, the thrown weapons, archers, equestrian, and arts and sciences to all be able to participate fully. To want any less would be hypocritical of us. But, frankly, having access to be able to play at all does come before the importance of some of these activities.
Let's ALL work together to find locations, methods, do repairs, be creative to make this a game worth playing for ALL its members.
