Khazaria was a large empire that stretched from the Black Sea to the
Caspian and north halfway across Russia.  The growing power of the Rus
in the 10th century eventually displaced it (yay Rus!), but for several
hundred years there was an interesting nation that had a mixed religious
acceptance and was thought of as a Jewish state.

Archaeologists believe they have found the capital, Itil.  A brief and
historically spotty account went out on AP and was picked up by some
