What I would suggest is to reach out to your local Hospitaler. After all, helping people to get started in the SCA is a big part of what they do.  There is nothing wrong with outfitting yourself entirely from the merchants on site - but it may be a little expensive.

  Greetings all, it's been a long time since I was active in the SCA (darn nursing school and wilderness living in Alaska!).
