"The Empire of Trebizond: The Last Gasp of Byzantium."


Professor Stephen Law of the University of Central Oklahoma discusses the
Trebizond Empire, the last of the successor states of the Byzantine world.
It fell eight years after the 1453 fall of the city of Constantinople, an
event which is considered by many to be the final act of the middle ages.
At the far eastern corner of the Black Sea, Trebizond held out until 1461
when it too was conquered by the Turkish Sultan, Mehmet II.  The modern
Turkish town of "Trabzon," rarely visited by Western travelers, is home to
several significant medieval churches; but it is also the port city for the
ancient pilgrimage site of Mount Mela.  It was there -- according to ancient
traditions -- that a miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary, supposedly painted
by the Evangelist Luke himself, was found in a cave.  Today, the frescoed
walls of the remote Sumela Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are a
spectacular testimonial to late Byzantine artistic and religious traditions.
