Halldor,

It is the Pythagorean Theorem. a^2 + b^2 = c^2 with your triangle sides being the heigth and half the width and the hypotenuse being the span you are looking for. If your pavillion is 10' tall and 10' wide your length would be:

c = sqrt(a^2 + b^2) = sqrt(5^2 + 10^2) = sqrt(25 + 100) = 11.18 feet

Note: That is from joint-to-joint and does not include any overlap you want.
