I'm speaking up as a relative newcomer to the SCA. My family and I have
been attending Med Fair for about 8 years, and the fighting is one of our
favorite things. We usually come every day, and we have spent hours
watching the bouts. But none of us have a clue what we are watching. A
couple of guys circle each other, there's a flurry of blows, and then
either they do it again or one of them kneels. I rarely have any idea why.
What if there were occasional bouts followed by a slo-mo replay, with a
herald describing the action? Or just a slo-mo demo, where some common
patterns were demonstrated, with narration? Knowing what I was watching
would do a lot to make the fighting even more exciting and engaging. At
this point, if I were given a streamer and told to root for someone, I
still wouldn't know whether he was doing well or not.
I'm not thinking of anything huge, but a five or 10 minute session a couple
of times a day would be pretty cool.
