[Namron] Med Fair Hospitaler's idea

I have a couple of pieces of chainmail that I generally bring for display in the A&S tent. And if someone asks they are welcome to try them on.

I, too, like the "dress up and photo" idea. Although I'm working on a chainmail coif, it's not likely to be done by Medfaire this year. I believe that chainmaile slides on easily and would be a great prop for this sort of thing. Maybe by next year it, too could be incorporated. It is aluminum but if anyone had a large chunk of steel maille available (not necessarily even for trying on, but available to heft and compare the weight), it would likely be interesting for people. Just a thought...

Lots of interesting ideas and comments. I think y'all are right, the head-through-the-hole pictures really don't give people any kind of taste of the SCA, which garb would do. If we set up a dress-up-and-take-a-picture area, I'd contribute some children's clothes, including some very inauthentic but easy to wear tabards. I might be able to scrounge up some adult garb, too, although we have barely enough to get us through the fair.
It's not in this thread, but Jacq had interesting ideas about backgrounds for "photo op" areas, so that when people look at their fair pictures, or post them on facebook, they'll have a reminder & a url. Maybe we could make an effort to make them part of the picture -- holding a pike, weaving, wearing a tabard. Maybe this already happens and I just don't know it!!
Pooky, there already is an effort to collect contact information and to follow up; I know that because that helped us finally get involved. Part of why it took us so many years after we first expressed interest, though, is that we just couldn't really imagine what it was like, what you *did* at a meeting besides wear funny clothes. I know everyone told me all sorts of things, but somehow I just didn't get it.

I still really like the idea of split mundane/SCA photos. Danr and I will mock one up to share with the list. Was it Kyna who suggested that these might be scattered around the encampment? I think that's a pretty cool idea. "You think this leatherworking is cool? Look : here's what the leatherworker will look like on Monday. Kind of a lot like you, isn't he?" I imagine them as both really visible and not intrusive, which might be a trick to pull off.

Perhaps, I should have worded my comment differently.

But you guys have done a great job at answering what I meant to communicate...which was basically that we've got people willing to be out there doing the talking, what other concepts or ideas should they be delivering...

Next time, I'll respond from the computer and not from the phone...

Thanks for making the translation happen!!! You guys are awesome.

I think the focus of this is more than just what the fighters are doing or their armor or their weapons but more of "We are the SCA and the fighting you see here this fine day is just one of the many, many things that we do. Anyone is able to join and learn to do any of these things from fighting, to archery, thrown weapons, making clothing, leather working, glass bead making, wood working, spinning, blacksmithing, tent painting, scroll making, dancing, or a whole host of other activities that we do year round! If you would like more information about who we are, what we do, and how you could be a part of it, please take a moment and stop by the Far Corners Tavern located right over there. No let's have some more FIGHTING!"

I thought that was exactly what us "rope walkers" had been doing....giving people the spiel...letting them feel and hold the weapons and explaining more about us....

I've been meaning to respond to this and related topics but for now I want to make one key point:
People coming by our area don't realize what we're about. Most of them don't have a clue about the SCA. Every year I'm amazed when I talk to them. This fact should be central to what we do at Medfair. In some ways we've improved in recent years but I think some might be amazed at how many folks leave our area with litte knowledge of the SCA. I say we need to explain more. One possibility is that heralds during the fighting could give a brief spiel about the SCA. A five minute break RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHTING might be a good way to do it. Now, I'm not suggesting a long break. Just somebody saying "hey, you know we do this year round m'lords and ladies. We have a King and Queen and sometimes go to wars," etc. etc. Something to make sure that most everyone knows we're not just doing this one weekend a year and so that they know that if they're interested {and I know not everyone is} then they can join us.

There are lots of intelligent people on this list; let's start thinking of some possibilities and thank you to Vigdis for helping to get the discussion started.

Here's my latest "can't sleep, guts are killing me, think about something else" idea. Not sure how it will sound in the morning, but right now I am totally in love with it.
I propose a hospitaler's area set up at Med Fair with a theme of "See Yourself in the SCA." This would include things like:
- painted boards with face cutouts, for photo props, for a variety of familiar period characters (knight, king, queen, Viking, Mongol, Celt -- what else?). There should be at least two for couples. Maybe some short ones for kids? And some step stools so kids could get their faces in the taller ones. Running up the side of the picture you could label the persona (14th c. French noble / http://www.sca.org/). Make it a really fun, free souvenir. I don't think these would be hard to make, and they'd be easy to store year to year if they had hinged or removable feet; they're just a sheet of plywood. There's nothing like this anywhere in the fair so it could be really popular. Maybe also a big sign saying, "sure, we'll take a picture on your phone for you" and volunteers willing to do so.
