Namron April Populace

April’s Populace doubled as a newcomers’ event, hosted at TE Kyna and
Eadwulf’s house. A couple hours were devoted to teaching classes and
communicating with the newcomers to help us mutually discover what
interests they held. Her Highness, Princess Caterina was also in attendance
and joined TE Namron for Populace

Princess Caterina:
Her Highness welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending Populace. She
then explained the concept of the Principality of Vindheim.

TE Namron (HE Yancy and HE Kolfinna):
Noted that Princess Caterina is part of the Barony of Namron, and then
explained their position as the Baron and Hersirkona of Namron. He’s the
figurehead and She’s the voice. His Excellency explained about the
different types of groups that form up the populaces of the SCA and about
Namron’s name. Her Excellency continued, going into more details about all
the different groups (Cantons, Shires, Ridings, etc) and explained that
Namron has its own Canton and invited Ritterbaron Wilhelm to talk about his
role as Seneschal of Skorragardr.

Ritterbaron Wilhelm:
Ritterbaron Wilhelm explained his title and talked about how large
Skorragardr is yet that it has a small population so they’re spread out of
a wide area. He discussed the fact that people aren’t confined to the
geographical area where they physically live and are welcome and encouraged
to engage and play with different groups. He encouraged people to feel free
to ask questions about anything they might be interested in learning as
well as share knowledge that they may already have.

Their Excellencies called forth the newcomers and both They and Her
Highness presented them with tokens to welcome them. TE presented armbands
made by Mistress Kyna that contained soil from the Barony. Her Highness
handed out mugs and offered to hand out more at events for those that were
unable to receive tonight.

His Excellency talked about the Medieval Fair. Much fun was had, despite
the strong winds taking down the pavilion and the fact that people worked
together to help manage the downed pavilion exemplifies that when you’re
joining the SCA you’re basically joining a large family. He also thanked
all the volunteers who helped with every aspect of the Barony’s part in the
Fair.

Seneschal of Namron (Don Cornelius):
Mentioned that Beltane will be taking place at the end of the month at Camp
Dakani and that it’s located next to Frontier City in Oklahoma City. He
then opened up a bid for anyone who would like to serve as AUTOCRAT (Event
Steward) or FEASTOCRAT (Feast Steward) for Namron’s upcoming Fall event,
Protectorate. We don’t currently have a site, although Camp Graham Ball in
Wichita Falls is likely available since we’ve been using it the past
several years. Will Rogers Boy Scout Camp in Cleveland is also a
possibility, provided they’re available. There are a few other sites that
may also be possible. The bid submission form will be available online
starting this weekend.

We’re opening the position of Thrown Weapons Marshal and will now accept
applications from anyone interested in the position. Application forms can
be found online, and anyone interested in applying who is not already a
marshal should talk to a local authorizing marshal about becoming
authorized. If you wish to find out more about Thrown Weapons, please check
the Barony’s website to see the schedule of events to learn about times and
location of practice.

Her Excellency: Namron is a very silly (foolish) place.

Treasurer of Namron (Lady Sibeal):
Her job is to keep track of all the Barony’s funds so that we know what we
can afford to spend towards events and purchases as well as managing
incoming funds. Mentions that she’s in charge of Gate at Beltane and would
be happy to help explain how it works for anyone interested in learning or
helping. She explains that Gate is used to pay for the site costs,
insurance, and activities and that it allows members of the populace access
to the event for its duration.

Dona Ashildur is called to speak about Heraldry:
She explained the different types of heraldry. First, she talked about
Voice heraldry (indicated Namron’s Herald) and mentioned the different
types including Court Heraldry, List Heraldry, and Processional Heraldry.
Next, she discussed Site Heraldry (which she likens to Twitter-for Site),
which helps keep people informed about what’s happening when and where at
an event. Book heraldry helps cover names, arms, badges, and heraldry in
the SCA to help people develop their persona and be more recognizable. This
involves a lot of research into people and places and history to help
provide people with names that could have existed in the time in place of a
persona. “Name Heralds tend to be people that read 10th century tax
documents for fun; something is deeply wrong with us.”

Armored Combat Marshal (Lord Fynn):
Handles anything heavy combat related for the Barony of Namron. He hosts
practices and has armoring days to help people get what they need to get
out on the field. Practices happen every Wednesday at the Moore Public
Library from 7-9pm. Invites people to join the Heavy Combat facebook group
chat and note the heavy involvement of The Excellencies on it.

There will be a regional melee practice the Sunday after Beltane at Camp
Dakani. It will take place from 9am-1pm. Explained that a melee was a large
fight, generally with people split into sides but occasionally as a
free-for-all.

Steel Combat Marshal (Lord Thaddeus):
Covers both rapier and cut & thrust combat. Practices are every Wednesday
at the Southern Oak Rec Center from 7-9pm. Please be sure to bring a long
sleeve shirt and pants, close-toed shoes, and groin protection. Loaner
equipment will be available to cover other needed protection/weaponry.
Wiesenfeuer will be having their Baronial event on April 14th-16th that
will include a rapier tournament. Southern Oak normally charges a $2 fee
per person, but supposedly Her Excellency of Namron is covering the costs
for April (might want to get that in writing… this doesn’t count). Rapier
combat will be available at the regional practice after Beltane as well.

Thrown Weapons/Archery (Lord Deinis):
Thrown weapons and archery practices are held the second Sunday and last
Sunday of each month. Please wear clothes-toed shoes. Children are welcome
(age 6 and above), but they must be accompanied by a parent or legal
guardian. We have martials that will help teach newcomers and welcome
everyone whether they are new or experienced.

Minister of Arts and Sciences (HL Halldora):
She’s not project monogamous. A&S covers a wide range of topics; pretty
much anything that can be taught/learned regarding how to make something is
part of A&S. Usually meet every Monday at the Norman Central Library from
6-8:30pm. Though occasionally we’ll have classes hosted at someone’s house
(such as blacksmithing). If you’re interested in learning something, she
can point you in the right direction.

We also have a scribal guild (Firestorm Ink) that designs, paints, and adds
calligraphy to award scrolls, which may be handed out to members of the
populace in recognition of their doing awesome things. They meet every
Tuesday. Currently they meet in-person the first Tuesday and virtually the
rest of the month, but more in-person meetings are planned.

Quartermaster of Namron (Saren):
Keeps track of all of the Baronial property (thrones, pavilions, list
field, loaner gear, etc). Keeps list of all the property and checks it out
as needed and verifies the condition when it’s turned back in to make sure
it’s not damaged. We will be having a workday on the 22nd of April around
10am at TE Kyna and Eadwulf’s to help fix things. It will start there then
move to the other location in central Norman.

Minister of Children (Lady Emma):
Designs and hosts children’s activities primary for events. If there is
enough interest, we may start holding classes outside of events as well.
Please let her know if you’re interested in Childrens’ activities as she’d
love the feedback; also let her know if you’re interested in assisting.
They have activities for ages 6-12, but also plan things for teenagers.
Chivalric and Steel combat is also available for youth.

Lady Emma is also one of the AUTOCRATS for Beltane, which she demonstrates
by riding in with coconuts. This year's Beltane is Monty Python themed.
There is gaming on Friday night. On Saturday we’ve competitions to
determine the Foolery, Bardic, Throw Weapons, Archery champions. We’ve a
quest going on all day and there will be a maypole. A May Queen, Spang
Princess, and Green Man will be determined. We’ll also have a not-so-hafla
halfa (with the Dark Horse Tavern) and campfire bardic. Mistress Adena will
be hosting a Tavern as well, so breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be
available for purchase.

We do have a Hospitaler (Lord Dairmuid), so if you need to borrow clothing,
we’ll have some available (and it’s been washed). Otherwise, any attempt at
pre-1605 clothing will suffice.

We’d like to thank Their Excellency for the loan of Their property. Please
feel free to introduce yourself to Their Excellencies of Namron and Her
Highness whenever you have a chance.

Vivat all the things!

Yours In Service,
Don Cornelius Meriläinen
