The difference I've noticed over the years is that the amount of spanghewing has decreased. In recent years, all we have at Beltane is the competition. Years ago, we used to have more free-form spanghewing, or spanghewing just for the fun of it also. We got more practice, so we tended to have better aim and enjoy it more. I'd really like to see a practice session where people could hone their spanghewing skills before the competition.
