What happened to chivalry? It was an evolving ideal, and toward the end
of the Middle Ages, certain non-knightly groups tried to find a place for
themselves in an elite military ethos. The resulting struggles over what
made a man chivalric include debates over the value of archery in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">England</st1:place></st1:country-region>, and
Robin Hood stories were adjusted to fit one view or another. After a
brief introduction, I will focus on how archery interacted with ideas of
chivalry in the Robin Hood legend, scholarly defenses of archery, and a <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">London</st1:place></st1:City> archery society
that took the names of Arthurian knights.<o:p></o:p></p>
