the overall effect of stained glass on Gothic architectural interiors and how
the glass manifests the medieval symbolism of light. Stained glass has been
called “a mystical building material of Gothic” but since glass cannot
support stone, a complicated building structure had to be devised with balanced
stresses and hidden supports in order to allow walls to be opened up to great
