style='font-size:12.0pt'>Professor Stephen Law of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Central
Oklahoma</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> discusses the Trebizond Empire, the last
of the successor states of the Byzantine world. It fell eight years after
the 1453 fall of the city of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Constantinople</st1:place></st1:City>,
an event which is considered by many to be the final act of the middle
ages. At the far eastern corner of the Black Sea, <st1:place w:st="on">Trebizond</st1:place>
held out until 1461 when it too was conquered by the Turkish Sultan, Mehmet
II. The modern Turkish town of "<st1:City w:st="on">Trabzon</st1:City>,"
rarely visited by Western travelers, is home to several significant medieval
churches; but it is also the port city for the ancient pilgrimage site of <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Mount</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Mela</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>.
It was there -- according to ancient traditions -- that a miraculous Icon of
the Virgin Mary, supposedly painted by the Evangelist Luke himself, was found
in a cave. Today, the frescoed walls of the remote Sumela Monastery (a
UNESCO World Heritage Site) are a spectacular testimonial to late Byzantine
artistic and religious traditions.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
