University of Oklahoma Department of the History of Science will</span></font></b><font

about two modern anxieties – vocational success and social and economic
mobility. These were also medieval concerns. Those who entered the
medieval university did so with a post-graduation goal in mind, or if they did
not, their patrons frequently reminded them of the goal that they should
have. And while university degrees were not always tickets to upward
mobility, we have many examples of the talented student from modest origins who
emerged from several years of study, examination and bureaucratic negotiation
to a position of authority, respect, and in many cases economic fortune.
In this presentation, he will illustrate this by examining the academic lives
and fortunes of two fourteenth-century scholars, Jean Buridan and Pierre
d’Allouagne.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
