Crusaders went to the Middle East expecting to confront Muslims ("Saracens"), but in fact they confronted a society more diverse than they could imagine. This talk discusses how today we continue trying to understand the medieval Middle East in terms of dichotomies
favored by Crusaders, erasing the distinctiveness and richness of the most diverse premodern society.

<b>“Inspired by the Rose: Turning a Medieval Romance into a Modern Opera” presented by Annie Holt, Ph. D., Assistant Professor of Humanities, University of Central Oklahoma.

</b>Dr. Holt will reveal the inside story of how a medieval classic, the 13th-century Romance of the Rose, inspired the creation of a new opera, due to open in early April on the East Coast. As the opera's creative producer, Dr. Holt will discuss the process
of adapting the text, share some clips of the finished performance, and consider how medieval texts and themes still resonate today.<b><o:p></o:p></b></p>
