If people start using a different name for the northern part of Ansteorra,
then I'll try to work it into the song, as long as it isn't "land of those
who live, fight, and roll in red dirt"... :) The song is about "us", not
the name, so we can keep the song. Though I've gotten attached to the name
as well...

In Old Norse, "red" is rauðr (rauthr in english characters), as in
rauðlitaðr (ruddy-faced) and rauðskeggjaðr (red-bearded). Land can be
heimr or land. Heimr implies region, but as in region of the universe, like
Niflheim and Alfheim. Land got used for places like Skotland and Bretland.

Pronunciation-wise, the au rhymes with "ow" as in "Ow, you hit me.". So
rauðr is pronounced "rowth". Land is pronounced more like "lond", and heimr
is pronounced "hame", with a long "a". You would have Rauðland(rowthlond)
or Rauðheim (rowthhame).

As an aside, I grew up in Oklahoma and joined the SCA to get away. I'd be
tickled if this mythical name had *nothing to do* with red dirt, snipe
hunting, or anyone with three or more first names. It's hard to think of
yourself as a Hero(tm) when when you are standing next to Billy Buck Joe
Bob...

Ulfie
Hey, how 'bout "Bard-ham"? Land of the Bards? Ham of the Bards? With a
giant jackalope in motley...
