Thanks for the input.  For any that might be interested, I found a cool
site that chronicles the in's and out's of the emergence of the different
kingdoms of what we now know at
England.  http://www.anglo-saxons.net/hwaet?do=seek&query=450-550  I
haven't read all of it yet, but the way they follow the sucession of just
Northumbria is facinating as it goes in and out of being two seperate
countries and just one kingdom.

If anyone knows of something that gives a basic overview like this of the
countries that became France, I would greatly appreciate it.
